Among the mysterious peaks of the Sibillini Mountains, in the Marche region, lies one of Italy’s most captivating legends: the Appennine Sibyl. An enigmatic figure who, over the centuries, has been described as a sorceress, prophetess, fairy, or witch, capable of enchanting knights, shepherds, and travellers alike.
Her legendary dwelling is said to be hidden in a cave on Mount Sibilla, a real place that for centuries has drawn explorers, pilgrims, and writers. There, according to tradition, the Sibyl lives surrounded by dancing handmaidens, guardians of secrets and wonders that have fascinated generations.
From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, her story inspired literary works such as Andrea da Barberino’s Guerrin Meschino and the writings of Antoine de La Sale, intertwining with older myths of oracles, fairies, and nature spirits. A legend that still endures today, through historical studies, local celebrations, and a rich tapestry of traditions linking the Sibyl to the landscape and culture of the Sibillini.
👉 In the new episode of the Atlas of Legends podcast, I take you on a journey through history and myth to uncover what makes this figure so compelling and timeless.
